The sandwich that started it

We didn’t wait for the trend.

Long before chicken sandwiches became a national sport, Bonafried was making fried chicken sandwiches in New Orleans.

The Southern was the first one we ever made, and it’s still on the menu today. Since then, the lineup has grown to include customer-created combinations, six sauces made in house, hand-cut fries and one sandwich that won the National Fried Chicken Festival twice.

“Dare I say it might be the best chicken sandwich in the city.”

The underlying magic

We’ll tell you everything but the marinade.

Tangy, herby and heavy on the dill.

Creole Honey Mustard

Chef Stephen’s favorite. That should tell you something.

Claim the Name.

Be the first to order a sauce combination and we’ll name the sandwich after you. It has to happen naturally… no cheating.

That’s how the Chris Special happened: Chris ordered the Special with The Mack, Bonafried put his name on it, and the sandwich went on to become an award winner.

Stephen and Bee

Stephen + Bee

Food guy. People person.

Stephen Maher and Bee Hollingsworth didn’t start Bonafried with a grand plan to become a New Orleans chicken sandwich institution.

Stephen grew up cooking. Bee grew up in the theater. Somewhere between falling in love and building a life together, they created Bonafried.

Stephen obsesses over the food, the process and the details. Bee makes sure Bonafried feels like the kind of place where somebody knows your name, your order or, possibly, the sandwich named after you.

The restaurant

The right place at the right time.

Bonafried found a permanent home in a former neighborhood washateria near the Fair Grounds.

The family who owned the laundry offered Stephen and Bee the space when it closed. That felt less like taking over a building and more like being handed the keys to the next chapter of a neighborhood story.

Pressed tin details remain. A washing machine door became a window into the kitchen. And there’s a coin-operated Chicken Machine dispensing trinket eggs—because of course there is.

Catering

Party food should be better than fine.

For full-service catering, the original Bonafried food truck comes to you. Guests order from the truck. Food comes out hot.

Catering starts at a $750 minimum. Choose full-size sandwiches or Three Bite Cuties. The truck stays within New Orleans—it just doesn’t do hills.

Need the food without the truck? Ask about party trays for pickup or local delivery.
